There are probably more than one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe. The images you will see on this page are from galaxies as close as 2.1 million light years (M31) to as far as 150 million light years (NGC7479). Historically, galaxies have been categorized according to their apparent shape as spiral, eliptical, or barred.
Some of the images here include galaxy clusters, grouping of multiple galaxies close by while others show interacting galaxies, where gravity from one is tugging at material from another.
CCD image of galaxies generally require at least one hour of exposure to capture details in the galaxy core, arms, and dust lanes.
